With last season's quarterback Anthony Richardson now in the NFL, who will step up for the Gators and second-year head coach Billy Napier?

The Florida Gators concluded their 2022 season under first-year head coach Billy Napier with a 6-7 overall record. It marked their second consecutive losing season after tallying the same record in 2021. The last time Florida suffered back-to-back losing seasons was from 1978 to 1979.

The team's seven losses included defeats to Tennessee, LSU, Vanderbilt, and Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl. However, the team did get a 29-26 statement win against No. 7 Utah to begin the season.

The offense could be severely hindered this season with Richardson having gone to the NFL and Nay'Quan Wright having transferred to USF. Florida picked up Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz from the transfer portal to lead the offense.

Even with those two losses, junior Montrell Johnson and sophomore Trevor Etienne will be returning and combined for 1,560 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Johnson led the team in rushing yards (841) and placed second in scoring with 11 touchdowns.

The Gators 2022 defense was ranked No. 97 in total defense — allowing 411 yards per game, 5.92 yards per play and 28.85 points per game, which was third worst in the SEC. Things will hopefully get better this season, but it doesn't help that a huge chunk of the defense graduated or is now in the NFL.
